Slovenia City Breaks

Slovenia City Breaks

A Mediterranean climate along the coast, lush vineyards and fields of sunflowers inland, virgin forests, snow capped mountains and sky resorts -- no, we're not California. You'll find all this plus gothic cathedrals, baroque palaces and more in Slovenia, a tiny country no bigger than New Jersey. From Slovenia you could go to Venice, Italy, for a Sunday outing and be back in time for dinner, its becoming a very popular city break destination. Oddly enough, many people haven't even heard of it, and others confuse it with Slovakia.

The best time to visit Slovenia on a city break is May to October, the warmest and driest time. Anytime between April to October good, but July and August can be crowded. In winter, the average temperature is 0C/32F. Ljubljana, Slovenias capital and largest city, is like Prague, but without the masses of tourists and is a wonderful city break experience. The city feels clean, green, and self-contented, and unlike other cities of national importance. Most of the major sights are along the Ljubljana River. On the southwest side is the Municipal Museum, with a collection of Roman artefacts, and a scale of Roman Emona and some period furniture. Adventure seekers should head for Mt Triglav, the country?s highest peak. It presides over the Julian Alps, cutting across Slovenia?s northwestern corner into Italy. The mountain was once believed to be the home of a three-headed deity who ruled the sky, the earth and the underworld. Since the Habsburg era, making the pilgrimage to Triglav has been a confirmation of identity for Slovenians.

Bled City Breaks
The medieval castle in Bled was the seat of South Tyrolian bishops for over 800 years, and was later a summer residence for the Yugoslav royal family. Located at the top of a steep cliff above Lake Bled, the castle has great views. If you want your wishes to come true, go to the bell of wishes at the white 15th century belfry on Bled Island. Supposedly, anyone who rings the bell gets what they wish for. Lying below the land of the Karst region are the Skocjan Caves, which were covered millions of years ago by a deep sea, leaving a thick layer of limestone deposits. You can pass through these deposits, home to 250 varieties of plants and five types of bats, via an artificial tunnel.

If you?re looking for beaches, there are several beach towns along Slovenia?s Adriatic coast. Koper is worth a city break visit, with an Italian look and feel, is only 21 km south of Trieste Italy, and was the capital of Istria under the Venetian Republic in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Old Town retains its medieval flavour. Piran is rich with Venetian Gothic architecture, including narrow streets, tending to be a mob scene at the height of summer. The nicest beach is at nearby Fiesa, where you can see Trieste?s Miramare Castle from the clean sands and boat-free waters.
