City Breaks in the Czech Republic
On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into two independent countries, Czech Republic and Slovakia, and Havel was elected the first president of the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and was approved to become a member of the European Union in 2002. On May 1, 2004 the Czech Republic joined the EU along with 10 other nations.

Czech Republic Regions
There is a lot to see in the Czech Republic besides Prague. Prague is a must for a city break if you don't have time to get to other places in the country. But if you have a few days when you feel like you've had enough of the city, go exploring. There are charming little towns full of historical treasures, there are numerous old castles, peaceful mountains, forests, lakes, villages, people and traditions.

Southern Bohemia
South of Prague. A beautiful area for a city breakwith cozy towns that look like they were taken out of a fairy tale. Don't miss Český Krumlov, one of the many locations in the Czech Republic that are protected by the UNESCO. Walk around Jindřichův Hradec or České Budějovice (make sure you try the original Budweiser), spend an afternoon in the picturesque Třeboň and its surroundings. The whole area is known for its pretty man-made lakes that are used for growing fish. The traditional Christmas carp come from there, too. Western Bohemia (Západní Čechy)
West and south-west of Prague. This is a well-known spa region, fanastic area for a health city break. You may have heard of Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) or Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) where many famous people have stayed for spa treatment. These are beautiful towns surrounded by green hills and thick forests, and they are rather quiet in spite of tourism. You can wander around and try drinking some of the 12 curative springs, but be careful and don't experiment too much since mixing the springs is about as risky as mixing alcohol! Towns: Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně, Františkovy Lázně, Plzeň, Domažlice, Klatovy... Castles and chateaus: Kladruby Monastery, Loket... Distance from Prague to Karlovy Vary: 130 km/80 miles Northern Bohemia (Severní Čechy) North and north-west of Prague. One of this region's big draws is the Czech Switzerland National Park that is located on the way from Prague to Dresden, Germany. The area around the town of Děčín owes its spectacular beauty to dramatic sandstone rock formations, canyons, and caves that have resulted from past geological processes. The park also boasts the largest natural sandstone bridge in Europe, the Pravčická brána (Pravčice Gate). Towns: Liberec, Litoměřice, Jablonec nad Nisou, Děčín, Česká Lípa, Teplice, Most... Eastern Bohemia (Východní Čechy)
East and north-east of Prague. This region offers a variety of scenery and is great for a peaceful city break, from fertile valleys to Czech Republic's highest mountains - the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains). The charming Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) nature reserve is a great place to take a few hikes and enjoy the beautiful sandstone formation and quiet forests. The zoo in Dvůr Králové is one of the most famous in the Czech Republic. Towns: Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Jičín, Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Litomyšl, Vrchlabí, Česká Třebová... Southern Moravia (Jižní Morava)
South-east of Prague. Some of the small towns and villages still look the way they did in the past. You can admire old houses neatly painted with bright colors and even see some older people wear traditional folk costumes in the streets on a cultural city break. Some places not to miss are the Kroměříř chateau with its beautiful gardens, the Lednice chateau, the beautiful Telč town square, and one of Moravia's main tourist attractions, the Moravský kras (Moravian Karst), a limestone karst region with caves. If you are a wine lover, Southern Moravia is the place to be. It is the country's wine growing region. You can bring home memories of the time you spent in the wine cellars being waited on by the friendly Moravians. Towns: Brno, Jihlava, Telč, Slavonice, Kroměříž, Zlín, Znojmo, Žďár nad Sázavou, Luhačovice... Northern Moravia (Severní Morava)
East and north-east of Prague. This region is great for a ski city break, what this region has to offer is the peaceful Jeseníky mountains, still relatively untouched by tourism. You can ski in winter, hike in summer, and spend relaxing time in the numerous pensions and mountain chalets that are scattered around. When you get tired of the mountains, you can drop down to Olomouc, which has the most valuable historical sights besides Prague. With a bit of luck you can hear the biggest organ in Central Europe play in St. Michal's Church. The St. Wenceslas Cathedral and the old university area are definitely worth seeing, too. Towns: Olomouc, Ostrava, Opava, Jeseník, Frýdek-Místek, Prostějov, Šternberk... Castles and chateaus: Bouzov, Šternberk, Velké Losiny...
