St James Park St James Park is situated on the south side of the Mall between Horse guards and Buckingham Palace. Two other royal palaces skirt the park. The most ancient palace is Westminster, now known as the Houses of Parliament. St James Palace on the north side of the Mall still carries the title Court of St James although the Monarch has lived in Buckingham Palace since 1837. The park can be reached from the Houses of Parliament on foot along birdcage walk exiting Parliament Square to the west.  Big Ben Big Ben is commonly refer to the clock tower situated next to the Houses of Parliament. In fact it actually is a huge thirteen-ton bell that strikes the hour and which is housed in the clock tower itself. In 1844 Parliament decided that a new building for the Houses of Parliament should incorporate a tower and clock. The tower was completed in 1859 and stands 316ft tall. A popular tourist destination, Big Ben is best seen from the southern side of Westminster Bridge or even from the Bridge itself. Traffic, road layout and trees otherwise obscure the view. The chimes of Big Ben as it beats out the old year are broadcast every year and herald partying and celebrations in nearby Trafalgar Square.
